ImsouaneSurf Guide

Plan your surf trip

Everything to sort out before you fly: when to go, how to get here, where to stay and what to bring.

When to go

Experienced surfers come from October to March, when the big NW swells light up the points. Beginners and longboarders can surf all year, with the gentlest waves from May to September.

Getting here

Fly to Agadir (AGA). Taghazout is about an hour from the airport and Imsouane about 2 h 20, by taxi, transfer, bus or rental car.

Where to stay

Taghazout for the famous points and a social scene, Tamraght or Aourir for beginners and budgets, Imsouane for long, mellow rights and quiet evenings.

Before you go: the checklist

Entry

UK and most EU passport holders don't need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after you arrive. Check your government's travel advice before booking.

Money

Morocco runs on cash (dirham, MAD), and you can't easily buy dirhams abroad. Use ATMs at the airport, in Agadir or Aourir: Taghazout's machines often run dry, and Imsouane has one that is often out of order. Hotels and bigger surf camps take cards; taxis, cafés and small shops don't.

Phone and data

Local SIM cards (Maroc Telecom, Orange, inwi) need your passport and an unlocked phone; around 20 GB costs about 100 MAD. An eSIM set up before you fly works the moment you land. Signal is patchy around Imsouane, so download offline maps.

Travel insurance

Check that your policy covers surfing: many standard policies don't, and neither do some credit-card policies. Look for water-sports cover and medical evacuation.

Wetsuit

4/3 mm from December to April, 3/2 mm from May to November, and a shorty or lycra is often enough in August and September. Booties help on the rocky entries at Anchor Point, Killer Point and Boilers.

Boards and lessons

Board hire costs about 100 to 150 MAD a day in Taghazout and less in Tamraght; a wetsuit is about 50 MAD a day. A 2-hour group lesson with board and wetsuit is about 200 to 300 MAD. A surf camp week runs from about €300 to €700, more for boutique stays.

Ramadan

In 2027 Ramadan is expected from about 8 February to 9 March. Visitors don't fast, but eat, drink and smoke discreetly in public. Some local cafés close in the daytime; tourist places stay open.

Tipping

Round up in cafés and taxis, leave 10 to 15% in restaurants, and 20 to 50 MAD for a transfer driver.

Staying safe

Don't leave anything in the car at isolated spots, surf with a friend at quiet beaches, and give stray dogs a wide berth at dawn and after dark.
