Best time to surf in Morocco

Morocco has waves all year, but the type of trip changes with the season. From October to March, North Atlantic storms send long-period north-west swells that light up the famous points. From May to September the swells are smaller and the north wind blows more, which suits beginners, longboarders and the sheltered Bay at Imsouane.

Spring and autumn are the sweet spots for many people: there's still plenty of swell, warmer water than in winter and fewer crowds than at Christmas or Easter.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Peak season for experienced surfers. The biggest, most consistent NW swells, offshore mornings at the points and the coolest water (17–18 °C). Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks.

Spring (Mar–May)

Swells get smaller but stay frequent through March and April, the water warms up and the crowds thin out after Easter. A great all-round time for intermediates.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Small, mellow waves and a steady north wind. The points are mostly flat, but beginners, longboarders and swell magnets like Tamri are in their element. The water is the warmest of the year.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

The first NW swells arrive in late September, and by October the points are running again. The water is still warm, so many locals call this the best time of the year.
